Les Deux Canailles

Les Deux Canailles

I meant to write about this restaurant for a while, but as anyone busy, . . . well, you know what I mean.  This place is just great. The food is innovative, inventive, fresh, tasty, excellent, and in addition, the wine list is not just full of gems, but it is also very (and I mean very) reasonably priced.   The chef is Japanese, but learned all the basics of the “cuisine française” in Europe, and the “maître d’hôtel” or butler, is Franco-Japanese, from Nice.  The food is definitely French, but with a Japanese touch. This is a small place and you really need to...

We love fish!

We love fish!

I’m so lucky to be in Nice to have fresh fish every morning from the Mediterranean sea.  I am a Sushi Master and I am quite picky when it comes to fish.  You’ve got to know where to  find the best fish in Nice and I’ll share my secret with you!   We have quite a large shopping cart which can carry up to 5 kg.  There is a big front pocket for fresh products.   If you want to get a good fish, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday are the best days.   So, let’s go to the Fish Market!     We buy our fish at the so called Liberation Market.  There...

Liberation market

Liberation market

This is the market we usually go to for our regular shopping. You’ll find everything there, fruits, vegetables, flowers, great fishes and a few locally produced products such as honey, cheese, etc. The market is situated on the ‘Place du Général de Gaulle’ in Nice, at the top of boulevard Malausséna and the beginning of boulevard Joseph Garnier. There is a large parking, but the market being very popular, it is not easy to find a parking spot. Whilst this is mainly a fruit and vegetable market there are also several fishmonger stalls. One of the main characteristics of this market is...

Cours Saleya – Market

Cours Saleya – Market

The Cours Saleya is located in the entrance of the Old City.  It’s known for the  flower market that takes place there, but we often go there as well for its general market to buy fresh food, particularly organic vegetables.  It opens from 6:00 AM to noon and is closed on Monday (there is an antique market on Monday).     Lots of local people come here for shopping too.  3 euros for the plate is a really good deal!           Farmers come here with their own products.  There are many Organic (BIO) stands as well.          ...

Nice Lawn Tennis Club

Nice Lawn Tennis Club

If you or your kids play tennis, you’ve got to play at our club, the “Nice Lawn Tennis Club”.  The club exists since 1890 and is home of the “Nice Open Tennis”, an ATP tournament.  Out of 18 courts, 13 are clay courts.  They are well maintained and you will find out how gentle clay is for your knees.  The club has paddle tennis courts, a Gym and a nice restaurant as well.   The club is located just down the hill, about 20 min walk from the villa through a beautiful park — a perfect warm up before playing!  It takes 5-10 minutes by car. If you are...

Swimming Pool

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool is located in front of the living room, after the terrace.  It is 10 m long by 5 m wide. There are 8 sunbeds available and there is a seating area by the pool.   While there is a security alarm device on the swimming pool, note that it is not fenced. This is one of the reasons we warn parents of young children.     The pool is cleaned and its products controlled once a...

Saint Paul de Vence

Saint Paul de Vence

Saint-Paul or Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a commune only about 20 km away from the house. One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, it is well known for its modern and contemporary art museums and galleries such as the Fondation Maeght which is located nearby. The visit of the old city is very enjoyable. Numerous art shops and galleries around to keep you busy for a while. You’ll find  great food there (check out the Colombe d’Or for something really special). If like me, you like the work of Chagall, then you can see the place he is resting in the local cemetery. By the...

Promenade des Anglais

Promenade des Anglais

Yes, this is the  famous and celebrated promenade along the Mediterranean in Nice. Every good thing you have heard about it is true. Yes, the place is magic. It is beautiful. It is popular. It is very pleasant, except maybe when it’s very crowded and it very hot under the sun. In Summer, go there for a stroll, in the early evening before the sunset. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. La Promenade des Anglais, early evening   “From Wikipedia” History Before Nice was urbanized, the coast at Nice was just bordered by a deserted band of beach. The first houses were...
